What is an Antiperspirant?
What is an antiperspirant?
An antiperspirant inhibits perspiration. Antiperspirants have been used to prevent excessive sweating for over 100 years. Your advantage over other measures is the purely superficial mode of action. Aluminum chloride, the active ingredient in the odaban antiperspirant, narrows the outlets of the sweat glands in the skin. As a result, less sweat is secreted, skin and clothing stay dry. The insolubility of the aluminum complex prevents it from being absorbed into the deeper layers of the skin, effectively limiting the treatment to the top layer of the skin. The effectiveness of aluminum chloride as an antiperspirant was proven as early as 1972 by an experimental study by the skin specialist Prof. Dr. Hagen Tronnier and his colleague Rentschler demonstrated. They were able to show that the number of active eccrine sweat glands decreased by an average of 70% and sweating by 64%.
How an antiperspirant works
When applied to the skin, aluminum chloride causes the skin cells to contract (astringency). The outlets of the sweat glands are narrowed in this way. The aluminum chloride then forms a complex that can be thought of as a small plug of sweat, sebum and skin cells. This complex closes the exits of the sweat glands so that no sweat can get onto the skin. After a few days, the astringency is eliminated and the effect of the antiperspirant wears off.
No sweat - no smell
If sweat comes into contact with special microorganisms that are part of the natural skin flora, sweat odor develops. Corynebacteria (especially in men) and micrococci (especially in women) break down sweat. In the process, unpleasant-smelling substances are formed that are perceived as sour to pungent. However, if sweat is not secreted in the first place, it does not produce any odors. As an antiperspirant, odaban promotes a natural, pleasant skin odor.
What is the difference between Antiperspirant and Deodorant?
Antiperspirant or deodorant?
How is an antiperspirant/antiperspirant different from a deodorant? Antiperspirant and antiperspirant basically mean exactly the same thing. In English, the word antiperspirant is used for an antiperspirant. However, antiperspirants / antiperspirants are fundamentally different from deodorants in terms of their effect and use. By forming pore plugs, antiperspirants / antiperspirants reduce the amount of sweat escaping or direct the sweat to areas of the skin where perspiration can occur more easily. Deodorants contain odor-inhibiting ingredients that mostly cover or absorb the smell of sweat. Deodorants also contain antiperspirant ingredients, but usually in such a small amount that the problem of underarm wetness is not reduced by a deodorant.
Differences in use between antiperspirant and deodorant
Antiperspirants / antiperspirants also differ greatly from deodorants in terms of how they are used: While a deodorant is used daily, usually after morning hygiene, antiperspirants / antiperspirants are applied less often. odaban - spray is used only in the evening before going to bed. After initial daily application, application can be quickly reduced to just 1-2 times a week. This brings with it a high level of independence and freedom, since you no longer have to think about using a deodorant every day. These differences are noticeable in the effect as well as in the price. A deodorant usually only costs a few euros, whereas antiperspirants / antiperspirants are usually more expensive depending on size and quality. However, the higher price of an antiperspirant / antiperspirant is put into perspective noticeably if you consider that just 30 ml of antiperspirant can last for half a year when used under the armpits. A deodorant, on the other hand, usually only lasts a few weeks. This effectively saves money, reduces the hassle of having to buy more and protects the environment.
Is there anything I need to consider for my skin?
Antiperspirant skin tolerance
An antiperspirant should always be used in the evening to prevent possible skin irritation. Ideally right before bed. Another important aspect when using the odaban antiperspirant spray is that the skin must be "dust-dry" at the time of application. There must be no residual moisture left on the skin. In order to achieve this, the skin can also be pre-treated with a commercially available talcum powder, available in any pharmacy. A hair dryer can also be used to get the residual moisture out of the armpits, for example. There is a very simple reason why the skin should be dry when using an antiperspirant. The active ingredient in an antiperspirant is usually an aluminum compound or a combination of different aluminum salts. If this active ingredient comes into contact with water or sweat, an undesirable by-product called aluminum hydroxide is formed. This by-product can cause skin irritation, which can cause a slight burning sensation and redness. To counteract these skin irritations, odaban's antiperspirant does not contain water as a carrier, but high-proof alcohol. Another advantage compared to the carrier water is that the alcohol evaporates very quickly during a spraying process and only a small percentage remains on the skin surface - so the active ingredient "aluminium chloride" has no chance to react with the water.
Antiperspirant for very sensitive skin
If you have very sensitive skin, we also recommend spraying the odaban antiperspirant onto a cotton or cosmetic pad and then dabbing the area of skin to be treated with this pad. The application on the head area should always be done with a cotton or cosmetic pad. Never spray the spray directly on your face.
Avoid application errors
The odaban antiperspirant spray should not be used together with other products, such as a night cream. If a night cream is usually used, the cream should not be used during the first 2-3 days of odaban use. After the antiperspirant has brought about initial regulation, which usually happens after about 3-5 applications, it is sufficient to only use the antiperspirant as needed. A night cream can be used as usual on the days in between. Another mistake that is often made when using the spray is that too much of the odaban antiperspirant spray is applied per application. 1 spray per armpit is sufficient. Product residue should be washed off normally the morning after use.
What should I do if Odaban doesn’t work on the first application?
For some users, it may be necessary to apply Odaban® Antiperspirant every evening for several weeks before achieving control over excessive sweating. Usually, once the sweat flow is regulated, using the antiperspirant once or twice a week is sufficient.
How long does one spray bottle last?
One spray bottle typically lasts between 6 to 12 months.
Is there any evidence of Odaban’s effectiveness?
The effectiveness of Odaban® Antiperspirant has been tested and confirmed by a dermatological institute. During the study, participants with excessive sweating applied Odaban® once daily in the evening on one underarm, while the other underarm was left untreated as a control. Results showed that after three days of use, sweat production was reduced by up to 90%, with an average reduction of about 71%.
Is Odaban odorless?
The active substances in Odaban® Antiperspirant are dissolved in pure alcohol, which evaporates in seconds without leaving any scent.
Is Odaban helpful for prosthesis wearers?
Odaban® Antiperspirant can help reduce sweating, preventing painful blisters and inflammation often associated with wearing prostheses. When used alongside a “protection sock,” it helps keep the skin in optimal condition.
Does Odaban work for facial sweating?
Yes, Odaban® Antiperspirant can help manage excessive facial sweating. We recommend spraying it onto a cotton or cosmetic pad and gently dabbing it on the areas of the face where needed.
Can stopping sweat flow be harmful to my health?
Regulating sweat secretion in specific areas is not harmful. The body will release sweat through many other areas to maintain temperature regulation.
Can I shave my underarms before using Odaban?
It is not recommended to shave your underarms immediately before or after applying Odaban® Antiperspirant. We suggest waiting 24 hours before and after application.
Can I use Odaban on my scalp?
Yes, you can spray Odaban® Antiperspirant directly onto the scalp. However, only treat specific areas rather than the entire scalp at once. Part your hair, spray Odaban® onto the scalp, and massage it in with your fingertips. Odaban® does not discolor hair or cause hair loss. Keep your eyes closed and use small amounts.
Can I use Odaban all over my body?
Yes. You only need a small amount of Odaban® Antiperspirant per area, which can be applied with a cosmetic pad (makeup removal pads work well). This method is ideal for treating sensitive areas like the face, groin, or under the breasts. Ensure your skin is perfectly dry before application, typically 30-45 minutes after a bath or shower.
Can I use Odaban during pregnancy or while breastfeeding?
Yes. Odaban® Antiperspirant acts only on the surface of the skin and is not absorbed into the bloodstream.
Why should Odaban only be applied before bedtime?
Odaban® Antiperspirant is broken down by water, so it’s essential to apply it to dry skin. Applying it before bedtime, when sweating is minimal, prevents irritation and stains on clothing.
How long does it take for Odaban to work?
Everyone is different: typically, it takes one to four applications to notice a difference. It may, however, require nightly use for up to a month to achieve full protection.
How often should I use Odaban?
It depends on the severity of your sweating. Most people find that once sweat regulation is achieved, Odaban® Antiperspirant only needs to be applied once or twice a week.
Why isn’t the bottle filled to the top?
Due to production requirements, the bottle is filled halfway. This ensures the spray mechanism functions correctly, even at higher temperatures.
Can I use other skincare products before and after applying Odaban?
We recommend applying Odaban® on dry skin before bedtime and letting it work overnight. You can then use other skincare products without any issues.
